Depression is more common than you may think. It impacts millions of people on a daily basis. It is a serious condition with a broad range of symptoms. Some emotional symptoms can include sadness, loss of interest in things you once enjoyed, feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, thought of suicide and death, intense feelings of guilt, shame and worthlessness. It is not unusual to also have accompanying physical symptoms as well. These can include restlessness, fatigue, problems focusing, significant changes in sleep and appetite and difficulty making decisions that were once simple. While this list is significant, it is not comprehensive.
Depression affects men and women. It impacts individuals of all races, ethnicities, and income levels. Individuals with a family history of depression may be more susceptible as well as people with chronic medical conditions. The use of alcohol and drugs can also contribute to depression.
There are numerous reasons why someone may be depressed and there are also several theories about what causes it. People often avoid seeking help because they are concerned about what others will think. They needlessly suffer in silence. Talk therapy and medication have proven to be quite helpful in alleviating distress related to depression
